UN: World faces largest humanitarian crisis since 1945

The world faces the largest humanitarian crisis since the founding of the United Nations in 1945. This was stated by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O’Brien, commenting on the situation in Yemen, Somalia, Southern Sudan and in the northeast Nigeria. Associated Press reported.

According to the UN Under-Secretary-General, more than 20 million people in four countries are currently facing starvation and famine.

«Without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death, and many more will suffer and die from disease," Stephen O’Brien told at a meeting of U. N. Security Council.

At the end of February, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that at least $ 4.4 billion was required for humanitarian operations in Yemen, Somalia, Southern Sudan and the northeast Nigeria, but so far only a small part of the amount has been received.

«Despite some generous promises, only $ 90 million has actually been received so far. It’s only two cents from every dollar that we need. We are at the very beginning of the year, but this figure is very disturbing," Guterres said.
