Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Kyrgyzstan supports UN resolution
The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling on Israel to return to the 1967 borders and withdraw from the occupied Golan Heights. The broadcast of the meeting was posted on the YouTube channel of the organization.
The co-authors of the resolution are Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, the UAE, Syria and other states. 91 countries, including the Kyrgyz Republic, voted for the document; eight countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, voted against the adoption of the resolution, and 62 countries abstained.
The Golan Heights is a disputed territory claimed by Israel and Syria. It belonged to Syria from 1944 to 1967, then was seized by Israel during the Six-Day War.
Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights is still not recognized by the UN and is disputed by many countries, but in March 2019 it was recognized by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Israel has built several settlements in the territory since 1967.
