CEC: No direct elections of mayors in Kyrgyzstan
The working group on improving the electoral legislation considers the introduction of direct elections of heads of local government bodies as premature. The Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission Nurzhan Shayldabekova said at the forum of local government bodies.
According to her, the direct election of a head of a local government body, taking into account the qualitative composition of the councils, can create very complicated, even destructive conflicts between two elective subjects.
She added that stability at all levels was the most important condition for the development of the country.
Nurzhan Shayldabekova admitted that the current procedure for elections of heads of local government bodies also had shortcomings and sometimes led to conflicts, but still not so large.
