Only one person convicted for bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan

Only one person has been convicted for bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan. Aisuluu Mamasheva, a deputy from Ata Meken faction, stated at the conference «Achievements and further steps of the Kyrgyz law enforcement bodies in the systemic approach to the prevention of gender and family violence.»

«They say that it is necessary to toughen the measures to prevent ala kachuu, to tighten the punishment. It was suggested to reclassify the law into an article on kidnapping. But after consultations with experts, it turned out that when a person was released, the crime was no longer present and the perpetrator remained unpunished,» she said.

The deputy recalled that in 2019 the new Criminal Code would come into force. And now a moratorium on amendments has been imposed.

The deputy stressed that since the entry into force of the law on bride kidnapping in 2015, only one citizen has been convicted. «This indicates that the enforcement of the law is poor,» she said.
