Kyrgyzstan - one of leaders in Central Asia in terms of maternal mortality
Maternal mortality rate in Kyrgyzstan remains one of the highest among the countries of Central Asia. Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Dainius Puras, told journalists.
According to him, from 1990 to 2016, infant mortality untill five years at the national level reduced by two thirds and the death at birth — by a half. Maternal mortality rate still remains high.
Dainius Puras added that 70 percent of deaths could be prevented. «This requires qualitative emergency obstetric care. An important cause of maternal mortality is the low quality of caesarean operation,» he said.
The Special Rapporteur also noted a negative trend in the teenage pregnancy area. According to Dainius Puras, access to family planning and contraception is not high in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The supply of contraception to Kyrgyzstan has been stopped. The Special Rapporteur recommends the authorities of the country to take responsibility for the promotion and protection of reproductive rights.
Dainius Puras stressed that during his visit to schools he noted that sexual education remains a sensitive issue.
