A project to improve the coverage and management of specially protected natural areas in the mountains of the Central Tien Shan, implemented since 2013, completed in Kyrgyzstan.

According to the information support consultant of the project Rita Tynaeva, the state nature park Khan-Teniri was established, the habitat of the snow leopard, which is in danger of extinction, increased almost three times, and local residents of Issyk-Kul region started using alternative businesses that don’t cause harm to nature.

The project was implemented to preserve the animal and plant diversity and natural wealth of the country, as well as their careful and rational use.

Particular attention was paid to work with the local population. Local communities have the opportunity to implement income-generating projects.

Soon seven shops for the processing of fruit and vegetable, sour-milk products, three greenhouses, a sewing workshop will open, and the ecotourism center and four ethno-towns in the territory of Khan Teniri will also start functioning. In total, about 100 permanent jobs will be created.

The project was implemented by the United Nations Development Program with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The total budget for 2013–2017 was more than $ 5 million.
