Water shortage in Bishkek: Only 12 percent of consumers have meters

Only 12 percent of Bishkek residents have water meters installed, while water losses exceed the limit by 70 percent. Deputy Mayor of the capital Zhyrgalbek Shamyraliev told at a meeting of Parliament.

Deputies discussed the problem of shortage of drinking and irrigation water in the republic.

«The norm of water consumption is 170 liters per person per day. Unfortunately, in fact, we register its excess. To date it even exceeds 500 liters. Water losses have already exceeded the limit by 70 percent,» Zhyrgalbek Shamyraliev said.

He also noted that the depreciation of water pipes is 70-80 percent.

Recall, private saunas, car washes and swimming pools, which consume a large amount of water, were temporarily closed because of the lack of water in the capital. In addition, temporary restrictions have been imposed on the supply of drinking water to Archa-Beshik residential area and Selektsionnoye, 105th Kontur, Salkyn-Tor, Nizhny Orok, Sary-Ozon, Plodovoe and Kaltar villages. Raids are regularly held to prevent irrigation of the adjoining land plots and gardens with drinking water during the daytime.

Nighttime restrictions on the drinking water supply were imposed in the southern part of Bishkek.
