Latvia wins its first ice hockey world championship medal
The national ice hockey team of Latvia defeated the USA and won a bronze medal at the World Championship, which ended in Tampere (Finland) on Sunday. Sports.ru reports.
Defenseman Kristian Rubins scored his second goal 1:22 into overtime to lead Latvia to a 4-3 victory over the United States.
Thus, for the first time in its history, the Latvian national team managed to win a medal at the World Championship. Prior to this, Latvia’s best result was seventh place (1997, 2004, 2009).
In the final, Canada defeated Germany 5-2 to become a champion for the 28th time.
