Presidential elections in Turkey: Recep Tayyip Erdogan loses first round
Presidential elections were held in Turkey on May 14.
The incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the single opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the candidate from ATA Alliance party bloc Sinan Ogan run for the post of the head of state. Another opposition candidate, Homeland Party Chairman Muharrem Ince, withdrew from the race on May 11, accusing his opponents of violating the principles of fair competition.
After counting 96.67 percent of the ballots, Erdogan won less than 50 percent of the vote.
According to the data published by the Turkish media, Erdogan has 49.35 percent of the vote, Kılıçdaroğlu takes the second place with 44.98 percent, and Ogan takes the third place (5.24 percent).
With such a result, the second round of the presidential elections in Turkey will take place in two weeks — on May 28.
