UN official calls on all countries to ‘put politics aside’ and help Syria

UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Imran Riza delivered a speech, in which he pointed out a number of difficulties encountered in providing assistance to the people of the country, who are under severe U.S. sanctions now. IRNA news agency reports.

Imran Riza urged everyone to put the politics aside and expressed the hope that the governments of all states would heed his request. «The Syrian Foreign Ministry has assured us that Damascus is ready to accept assistance. We hope that political considerations will be put aside so that aid reaches Syria,» he said.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 hit southern Turkey on February 6 near Gaziantep city, where more than a million people live. Dozens of aftershocks were registered in Syria, Georgia and other countries.

The Turkish Embassy in Kyrgyzstan announced collection of humanitarian aid. A single deposit account has been opened in Kyrgyzstan to raise funds to help the victims.

According to the latest data, the number of victims in Turkey and Syria exceeded 11,000 people, the number of injured — more than 49,000.

Kyrgyzstan sent rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations to Turkey.
