Bishkek City Court sentences activist Adilet Baltabai to five years in prison
The Bishkek City Court sentenced an activist Adilet Baltabai to five years in prison. He was arrested in the courtroom. His wife Gulkaiyr Japarova told 24.kg news agency.
Earlier, the Pervomaisky District Court found the activist guilty under the article «Calls for mass riots» of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. He was sentenced to five years probation — then probation supervision was applied to him for three years. The blogger was released from custody in the courtroom.
According to Gulkair Japarova, the prosecutor’s office appealed the decision of the district court to a higher court.
«We came to the hearing, hoping for justice. My husband was arrested in the courtroom and sentenced to five years in prison. They overturned the district court’s decision. But the husband did not kill anyone, did not steal anything. We thought we live in a country with the rule of law. The husband only expressed his dissatisfaction with what was happening. We had big plans. But the state destroyed them. Destroyed our family,» she said.
Adilet Ali Myktybek (Baltabai) opposed the legalization of casinos and held rallies. On June 30, 2022, the activist was taken to the Pervomaisky District Department of Internal Affairs from his home. Later he was placed in the remand center 1.
