Films about war in Syria, elections in Belarus banned from screening in Bishkek

Bishkek hosts the annual international documentary film festival «Climate and Crises: Situation with Fundamental Rights of Citizens».

According to its organizers, the competition program includes 22 documentary films from Ukraine, the Czech Republic, France, Slovakia, Germany, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Screenings are scheduled to take place at Broadway cinema from November 14 to November 18.

However, it became known that a ban on screening of two documentaries has been imposed. According to the head of Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan human rights center Tolekan Ismailova, the contract for screening of films was signed a month and a half ago, but problems arose three days before their screening. The administration of the cinema reported that they were being pressured.

The film «This Rain Will Never Stop» directed by Alina Gorlova about the war in Syria and the film «Mara» directed by Sasha Kulak about elections in Belarus were banned from screening.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet, Edil Baisalov, did not help resolve the situation. The films were banned from screening by the Ministry of Culture.

The ministry itself still does not comment on the ban.
