Kazakhstan cancels First President's Day and returns Republic Day
The Day of the First President was officially excluded from the Kazakhstan’s calendar of public holidays. The current leader of the country, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, signed amendments to the legislation, which also provide for the return of the Republic Day, the celebration of which was canceled under the presidency of Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The Declaration on State Sovereignty of Kazakhstan was adopted on October 25, 1990. Its text was approved by the Supreme Council, then the country’s parliament. The Republic Day was celebrated from 1992 to 2009. Then it was excluded from the list of holidays in accordance with the law signed by the Elbasy.
The Day of the First President existed as a public holiday for less than 10 years. It has been celebrated in Kazakhstan since 2012 on December 1. This date is now listed among the «publicly significant» holidays along with the Day of State Symbols, or the Day of Gratitude. Kazakhstanis will not have a day-off on this day.
