Kamil Ruziev’s case: Human rights activists ask to pay attention to torture
The Coalition for Equality asked the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to hold a fair trial and investigate the facts of torture and threats against a human rights activist Kamil Ruziev. The organization reported.
Human rights activists believe that the Institute of Ombudsman, headed by Atyr Abdrakhmatova, should play an exceptional role in protecting the activist. The appeal states that in order to restore the rights and legality in the case against Kamil Ruziev, it is important for specialists from the Ombudsman’s Institute to thoroughly investigate the reasons for illegal persecution and absurd accusations against him.
«We are concerned that, despite a number of violations that were committed during the initiation of a criminal case and the investigation, the state prosecutor believes that the guilt of the human rights activist was proven and asks for a five-year prison sentence,» the organization said.
Employees of the State Committee for National Security detained the human rights activist on May 30, 2020 in Karakol. The court placed him under house arrest. Kamil Ruziev is accused of using a fake medical certificate. According to investigators, the human rights activist allegedly did this in order to extend the deadline for appealing against the decision of the Karakol City Court in one of the cases on which he worked. However, in 2021, an examination confirmed that the certificate was not fake.
