Freedom for Eurasia urges to stop harassment of free media in Kyrgyzstan

International organization Freedom for Eurasia urges to stop harassment of free media and journalists in Kyrgyzstan.

The organization says in its statement that the country’s authorities should not put pressure on independent media and interfere with their work.

Both Kyrgyz and international audiences must have access to free media that publish independent and objective material, especially in the context of dangerous propaganda.

Human rights activists point to a number of incidents involving journalists that are of concern.

In early March, the director of Next TV Taalaibek Duishenbiev was placed in a pre-trial detention center of the State Committee for National Security. He was accused of inciting ethnic hatred. The Next TV office was sealed, the equipment was seized, the prosecutor’s office demanded to shut down the TV channel.

In February, the Prosecutor General’s Office opened a case against Kaktus.media under the article «war propaganda». The reason was information reprinted from a Tajik news website.

In January, a well-known journalist Bolot Temirov and akyn Bolot Nazarov were detained after publishing material about the family business of the head of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev.
