Russia's region to ban migrants from working in trade and catering sectors

Migrants will be banned from working in catering, transport and retail trade sectors in Kaluga Oblast (Russia). The Russian media report, citing the Governor of Oblast Vladislav Shapsha.

It was also reported that the number of work permits issued to migrants will be limited in the Oblast. The reason for this were the conflicts between the local population and foreigners. In particular, before the New Year, migrants stabbed a 16- year-old teenager in the heart during a fight.

«The issue of migrants is perhaps the most acute to date. Our task is to regain control of the situation. I will make the necessary decisions in the near future. Ban on the work of foreign nationals in public catering, transport and retail trade,» the head of Kaluga Oblast said.

He promised to essentially limit the number of work permits issued to migrants. The governor expressed his intention to make the Russian language exams more transparent for those who want to become citizens of Russia.

Later Vladislav Shapsha explained that a total ban is out of question. According to him, migrants will be able to get the vacancies that are not filled by locals.

«There will be no zeroing, but a restriction. Last year, there was such desynchronization, when much more people came to us than required. We must take control of this process and stop it,» the governor of the Oblast added.
