COVID-19: Russia ranks second in world in mortality from coronavirus
Russia has overtaken Brazil and ranked second in the world in the number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic after the United States. Reuters reports, citing the official data from the Russian authorities.
The agency analyzed Rosstat’s excess mortality data from April 2020 to November 2021 together with the December 2021 death toll according to the operational headquarters.
«Rosstat reported that 87,527 people died from the coronavirus in November, making it the deadliest month in Russia since the pandemic began. The total number of deaths from the pandemic in Russia reached 658,634, according to Reuters calculations. Thus, the country has overtaken Brazil, in which 618,800 deaths were recorded,» the media outlet notes.
According to it, the number of deaths in the U.S. is higher — 825,663 people, but there are more than twice as many people than in Russia.
«So far, the death toll in Russia has not been affected by the Omicron strain, and is mostly due to a spike in infection in October and November, which health authorities blamed on the Delta variant and a slow vaccination campaign,» Reuters added.
