EU expects freedom of expression, pluralism in parliamentary elections
«We expect that there will be freedom of expression of thought, speech, pluralism of choice for voters in the upcoming parliamentary elections,» Eamon Gilmore, the European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights, said at a briefing.
As part of the visit to Kyrgyzstan, EU Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala and the Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore met with the President Sadyr Japarov, representatives of civil society, head of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev, Ombudsman Tokon Mamytov and the Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev.
«The main message we conveyed is that the European Union attaches particular importance to the rule of law. In addition, issues of independence of the judiciary, including human rights bodies, the Institute of the Ombudsman were discussed. We talked with partners about the upcoming parliamentary elections and welcomed that the OSCE / ODIHR was invited to observe them,» Eamon Gilmore said.
