Kyrgyzstan to be assisted in combating child labor through business development
A pilot project to determine prospects and strategies to combat child labor through involvement in productive employment was launched in Kyrgyzstan. Merten Sievers, Value Chain Development and Entrepreneurship Coordinator at the International Labor Organization (ILO), stated today.
According to him, the work began in October 2018 together with the Association of Young Entrepreneurs. The project will expand the economic opportunities of vulnerable families based on an analysis of market patterns for the production and sale of cotton, walnut and beans.
«We looked at various value chains and detected hot spots at every stage where child labor is used, what is the potential for the development of this chain. For example, with regard to cotton, it is a difficult question, because it is successfully cultivated and sold to neighboring countries. There is a better situation with beans and walnuts. In addition, we analyzed the value chain of winter tourism in Kyrgyzstan,» the coordinator of the organization told.
