New school year begins in Kyrgyzstan

The new 2026/2027 academic year has begun at educational institutions across Kyrgyzstan. Today, September 15, schools hold First Bell ceremonies, with the formal assemblies starting at 9 a. m.

The Ministry of Education told 24.kg news agency the topics for the first lessons:

  • Grades 1–2: «My Homeland — Kyrgyzstan»;
  • Grades 3–4: «My Homeland — Kyrgyzstan: 35 Years of Independence!»;
  • Grades 5 and 7: «Know the Past — Appreciate the Present — Create the Future!»;
  • Grades 8–9: «35th Anniversary of Independence: What Will Kyrgyzstan Be Like in the Future?»;
  • Grades 10–11: «35th Anniversary of Independence: My Choice — Kyrgyzstan’s Future.»

Due to the phased transition to 12-year education, there will be no sixth grades this year. Fifth-graders will move directly into grade 7 of the 12-year school system, resulting in a larger number of seventh-grade students.

Last year, students in grades 1, 2, 5 and 7 transitioned to the 12-year system. This year, students in grades 3 and 8 will begin studying under the new curricula and teaching materials.

There are around 2,400 schools in the republic, including more than 200 private schools. They are attended by more than 1,586 million students.

More than 146,000 first-graders will go to school for the first time.

More than 90,000 teachers are employed in the school education system.
