Kyrgyzstan to reduce number of foreign players in football league

16:16, 13 October 2026, Bishkek - 24.kg news agency

The number of foreign players allowed on the field in Kyrgyzstan’s football league will be gradually reduced. By 2029, no more than four foreign players will be allowed to play for each team at the same time, while at least seven players must hold Kyrgyzstan’s citizenship. The decision was made at a meeting of the executive committee of the Kyrgyz Football Union (KFU).

According to the KFU, one of the key issues discussed was revising restrictions on foreign players participating in matches in the Top League.

Currently, clubs can register up to 10 foreign players for a season. However, no more than seven foreign players may be on the field at the same time, and at least four players must hold Kyrgyzstan’s citizenship.

Under the KPFL 2.0 development strategy, the number of foreign players allowed on the field will be reduced by one each year, while the minimum quota for Kyrgyz players will increase.

As a result, by 2029, teams will be required to field no more than four foreign players and at least seven players holding Kyrgyz citizenship.

The issue was considered following a proposal by executive committee member Omurbek Babanov. After discussion, the committee decided to retain the existing schedule of restrictions set out in the national football development strategy.

The football union believes the system will give local players more playing time, create additional opportunities for young footballers and strengthen the talent pool of the national team.

The executive committee also approved the date and venue for the 2026 Kyrgyzstan Cup final. The decisive match will take place on October 24 at Dolon Omurzakov stadium in Bishkek. Muras United from Jalal-Abad and Neftchi from Kochkor-Ata will compete for the trophy.

The committee also reviewed draft regulations on bonuses for the national football, futsal and women’s football teams. The document was sent to the technical committee for further revision, with an updated version due by November 1, 2026.

In addition, the committee approved a merchandising development strategy for the national team aimed at promoting team branding and expanding engagement with fans.

The selection of a technical partner for the Kyrgyz Football Union remains unresolved. Discussions will continue after further consideration of the issue.
