President of Georgia considers elections illegitimate and calls for protests
President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili has called the recent parliamentary elections in the country illegitimate and called for protests.
According to her, the parliamentary elections, which resulted in the victory of the ruling Georgian Dream party, were «totally falsified.»
The head of state called on opposition supporters to come to the country’s parliament building today, October 28. «Recognition of these elections is impossible. This is tantamount to recognizing Russia’s entry here, Georgia’s submission to the Russian Federation. This is not why I came to this country, this is not why our ancestors lived, and we will not accept this. No one can take away Georgia’s European future,» Georgian media quoted her as saying.
Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili also spoke out against the voting results. «Now is the time for a big protest,» he said.
The day before, the Georgian Central Election Commission completed the vote count in the parliamentary elections. Ballots from 3,110 polling stations out of 3,111 have been processed. The results of the vote at one station in Marneuli have been annulled after an incident involving mass ballot stuffing.
According to the results of the count, the ruling Georgian Dream party has won 53.92 percent of the votes. Four opposition political organizations have also entered Parliament.
