World Bank to allocate $7.64 million to Kyrgyzstan for water supply, sanitation
The International Development Association (IDA) (a credit institution that is part of the World Bank Group) will provide Kyrgyzstan with $7.64 million in additional financing for the Sustainable Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project. The Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan approved the receipt of additional funds in the first reading.
The initial project amount was $71.2 million. According to the Director of the Water Resources Service Almazbek Sokeyev, it was planned to provide 93 villages with drinking water. He told the deputies that work had already been completed in 63 villages, it is underway in 11, and design and estimate documentation is being prepared in the rest.
$7.64 million, according to the background statement to the bill, will be used to build new and rehabilitate existing drinking water supply and sanitation systems, improve sanitary conditions, and install local treatment facilities in Chui, Osh, and Issyk-Kul regions. Households that install shower cabins in their homes will have sewerage systems and will be provided with incentive grants in the amount from $100 to $300.
IDA will provide $7.64 million for 50 years with a ten-year deferment of payments at a zero interest rate.
During the consideration of the bill, a dispute arose between MPs and members of the Cabinet. MP Alisher Erbaev stated that the documents were classified. Members of the Cabinet of Ministers reported that the project was classified during negotiations with IDA. After long debates, the majority of MPs finally passed the document in the first reading.
