Cabinet Chairman Adylbek Kasymaliev visits Rogun HPP in Tajikistan
As part of a one-day working visit to Tajikistan, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Adylbek Kasymaliev visited Rogun hydroelectric power plant (HPP). The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported.
The Prime Minister of Tajikistan Kohir Rasulzoda personally led the tour, during which Adylbek Kasymaliev got acquainted with the progress of construction, the scale of the largest hydropower project in Central Asia, as well as the current state of affairs, technical characteristics of the station and its role in ensuring energy security in the region.
«The experience gained during the construction of Rogun HPP is of great value to us. Studying the technologies and methods used here will undoubtedly help us successfully implement Kambarata HPP-1 project, which is of strategic importance for the energy security of our country and the entire region,» Adylbek Kasymaliev noted.
Construction of Rogun HPP began in 1976, but was halted in 1993 due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent economic difficulties. Work resumed in 2008, and in 2016, Vakhsh River was dammed to build the reservoir. The first hydroelectric unit was launched in November 2018, the second — in September 2019.
Construction of Rogun HPP is ongoing, with the final, sixth unit expected to be commissioned by 2029, and full reservoir filling anticipated by 2036.
From 2008 to 2024, Tajikistan allocated about 42.5 billion somoni (approximately $4 billion) for the construction of Rogun HPP.
Once completed, it will become the largest hydropower plant in Central Asia with an installed capacity of 3,600 megawatts and an average annual electricity generation of about 13.8 billion kilowatt-hours.
